Between January and October 2024, Senegal recorded 502 boats carrying irregular migrants, said the Minister of the Interior and Public Security, Jean Baptiste Tine, during a ceremony in Ziguinchor. These boats, 64 of which left the Senegalese coast, transported a total of 34,162 migrants to the Canary Islands.

Mr. Tine shared these data during the installation of the regional and departmental committees to combat irregular migration in Ziguinchor, in the presence of Governor Mor Talla Tine, administrative authorities, territorial elected officials, department heads and defense and security forces.

Jean Baptiste Tine underlined that migration, as a global and complex phenomenon, represents a major challenge for States due to the demographic and economic dynamics it generates. “Irregular migration, which has become a national and even international concern, is increasingly taking on worrying dimensions with its share of misfortune, including numerous losses of human lives,” he declared.

To deal with this scourge, the Interministerial Committee to Combat Irregular Migration (CILMI) was established. This committee, placed under the supervision of the minister, coordinates the actions of the services and structures involved in the fight against irregular migration. It has branches at regional and departmental level to ensure the application of directives throughout the national territory.

The minister indicated that the Ziguinchor region, due to its proximity to the Atlantic and the borders with Gambia and Guinea Bissau, is a strategic point for migratory movements. “This system will allow us to act in a coordinated and effective manner,” he concluded.
