Following the death of the co-founder of the National Front (FN) Jean-Marie Le Pen on January 7, 2025 in Garches, reactions in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais are numerous on social networks, coming from political figures of the National Rally (RN) as well as La France insoumise (LFI).
Jean-Marie Le Pen, born June 20, 1928 in La Trinité-sur-Mer, was an emblematic figure of the French far right. Co-founder of the National Front (FN) in 1972, he chaired this party for 38 years until 2011. His political career spanned almost 65 years, during which he was several times a Member of Parliament, an MEP and a regional councilor..
He ran for president five times, reaching the second round in 2002 alongside Jacques Chirac (RPR). Known for his polemical statements and his controversial positions on immigration, Le Pen left his mark on French political history, despite the numerous accusations of racism and anti-Semitism which punctuated his career.
Even if her daughter, Marine Le Pen, deputy for the eleventh constituency of Pas-de-Calais, has not yet reacted at 4 p.m. this Tuesday, January 7, 2025 on social networks, in the Nord and Pas-de-Calais , many deputies from the National Rally (RN) expressed their sadness, starting with Steeve Briois.
On Facebook, the mayor of Hénin-Beaumont (62) writes in particular: “A figure of the Fifth Republic, he was the reason for my commitment in 1988. Many of us felt both respect and tenderness for the one who was the only one to have seen what others did not see, to have said what others did not want to say, and thus to impose in the public debate. His charisma, his talent and his personality made him capable of uniting all the components of the national camp around him, with a single goal: the revival of France and the French..”
In Denain, Sébastien Chenu, RN deputy for the North, regrets on X (formerly Twitter) the disappearance of a “Homme [avec un grand H] of an immense culture, which brought the hope of millions of French people. He loved France, he entered its History.”
The RN deputy from the North Thierry Tesson publishes an old photo of Jean-Marie Le Pen as a good father alongside Marine as a child, to whom he addresses his thoughts, as well as to those close to the politician.
As for Aurélien Le Coq, LFI deputy of the 1st circusonscription of the North, he lists: “Lhe racist, anti-Semitic, torturer barbouze, colonialist, negationist, Nazi record publisher, homophobe, masculinist, Jean-Marie Le Pen, is dead. The man is no more: he remains to bury his ideas and his party.”
The man was 96 years old. The date of the funeral has not yet been announced.
