Resignation of Justin Trudeau: a legacy highlighted on the West Coast

In British Columbia, Prime Minister David Eby highlighted the legacy of Justin Trudeau, at a time when other politicians are already considering their entry into the race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.

He cited Justin Trudeau’s commitment to reducing the cost of child care in particularly difficult times for Canada.

We haven’t always seen eye to eye, but I want to thank Justin Trudeau for serving as Prime Minister during some particularly difficult times our country has been through.

David Eby also shared his fears about relations with the United States: Today we face new challenges and serious threats. Whoever the next Prime Minister is, we must come together as Canadians to protect workers and businesses from devastating tariffs.

Prime Minister David Eby lost his closest ally in Ottawaestimates for his part John Rustad, the leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia.

He can no longer point the finger at Ottawa to justify radical policies such as carbon taxes, emissions caps, safe drug supplies, decriminalization and extreme identity politics.

Among other significant reactions in British Columbia, that of the former Minister of Justice under the leadership of Justin Trudeau, Jody Wilson-Raybould, who resigned in 2019 after being the subject of pressure from the Prime Minister and his government in order to negotiate a reparation agreement that would have avoided a lawsuit for the engineering firm SNC-Lavalin.

We can finally turn the page – and in doing so, we must continue to focus on building a stronger Canada in an increasingly volatile and uncertain worldshe indicated.

I hope our discourse rises beyond petty and toxic partisanship, and returns its focus to developing sound public policy to guide our futureshe added.

For her part, the leader of the Green Party of Canada, Elizabeth May, looked back on the start of Justin Trudeau’s political career.

After the 2011 election, the Liberal Party was pushed far back, and the MP for Papineau was given the back corner of the Center Block in Ottawa, sitting with me, the first Green MP, and the rest of the Bloc, which had four MPs at the time.

Justin Trudeau was recruited as someone who could save the Liberals.

Liberal Party leadership race

Very quickly after the announcement of Justin Trudeau’s resignation, the former Liberal Prime Minister of British Columbia, Christy Clark, reacted on social networks.

As a lifelong Liberal, I look forward to joining the tens of thousands of Canadians who will be called upon to choose our next leadershe said.

This is the greatest opportunity in more than a decade to grow the party and welcome new Liberals who share our concerns about the future of the country. This is an opportunity not to be missed!

Christy Clark’s aspirations are not new, but they would mark a clear change within the Liberal Party, explains Nicolas Kenny, political analyst and professor of history at Simon Fraser University.

She is active on the ground, but she does not have the same conception as Justin Trudeauindicates the analyst. He notably recalls Christy Clark’s rapprochement with Stephen Harper during his functions as Prime Minister, and his work with John Rustad, current leader of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, when he was under his leadership.

This would be quite a shift to the right for the Liberal Party, which may want to keep a more progressive image to fight Pierre Poilievre.

Another possible candidate in the race is the current federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and MP for North Vancouver, Jonathan Wilkinson.
