With the new year coming, it’s the perfect time to do some sorting in the kitchen.

The kitchen is one of the rooms where we spend the most time. However, it is often full of objects forgotten in drawers or cupboards, which are of no use or which contribute to disorder and frustration. Doing a little decluttering for the new year is a great way to start the year on a healthier, more organized footing. Here is a list of items to get rid of to get off to a good start in 2025.

1. Old sponges

Did you know that your kitchen sponge can be a real breeding ground for bacteria? A 2022 study published in the Journal of Applied Microbiology found that after four weeks of use, conventional and antimicrobial sponges contain amounts of potentially harmful bacteria. Remember to replace them frequently to limit the risks.

2. Worn cutting boards

Grooves that form over time on your cutting boards are a sign that it’s time to change them. These cracks can harbor hard-to-clean bacteria and lead to contamination. Choose bamboo planks, as they are harder and less porous than other types of wood. Finally, consider using two different boards, one for raw meat and seafood, and one for vegetables and bread.

3. Ancient utensils

Chipped, cracked or damaged utensils can be dangerous. Chipped wood from your spatulas or rubber that disintegrates in hot liquids can end up in your dishes. Additionally, crevices make these utensils difficult to clean, providing a breeding ground for bacteria. Do not hesitate to replace them.

4. Black plastic utensils

Even if they still appear to be in good condition, these utensils may contain recycled plastics from old electronic devices. These materials can release flame retardants into your food. As a precaution, replace them with quality silicone or wooden utensils.

5. Old spices

Spices, although they do not spoil quickly, lose their flavor and aroma over time. Whole spices will keep for two to four years, while ground spices should be replaced after three years. If you can’t remember when you bought them, it’s time to throw them away.

6. Lost food at the bottom of the freezer

Your freezer may contain forgotten treasures, but also foods affected by freezer burn. These alter the quality and taste of food. Free up space by throwing away those damaged products. Remember to note the freezing date on your leftovers to better manage their storage.
