Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday during a press briefing his intention to resign “once the Party has chosen its next leader, following a national, rigorous and competitive process.”

He admitted that “Parliament has been paralyzed for months.”

After nine years in power, Justin Trudeau was put in difficulty by the surprise resignation of his Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, last month.

The latter, one of the most important and loyal ministers, disagreed with Justin Trudeau on how best to deal with US President-elect Donald Trump’s threat to impose high tariffs on Canadian products.

Several MPs from Justin Trudeau’s party had recently called for his resignation. His popularity with the Canadian public has also plummeted, with the latest polls suggesting his Liberal party faces an electoral defeat when Canadians go to the polls this year.

Justin Trudeau first came to power in 2015, leading his party from third to first place in an unexpected victory. He promised an open immigration platform, the fight against climate change and increased taxes on the wealthiest.
