Mr. Trudeau announced Monday morning that he will resign from his post after a race for leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada.

This announcement comes two weeks before Donald Trump is sworn in as president of the United States. However, the president-elect has already threatened to impose customs tariffs on all Canadian imports.

The president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Candace Laing, welcomed Mr. Trudeau’s decision on Monday. She emphasizes that “his resignation marks a decisive turning point as Canada faces unprecedented national and international challenges.”

Mme Laing said in a statement that Canada could not afford inaction “with so much at stake” and that unity was essential moving forward.

The CEO of the Business Council of Canada, Goldy Hyder, lamented that the federal government is so often at odds with the private sector, and added that greater collaboration was needed for the country to succeed.

According to Tu Nguyen, economist at RMS Canada, Mr. Trudeau’s announcement opens the way to a new wave of uncertainty which could weaken the country’s negotiating position, threatened by American customs tariffs.
