Summary of his political career

April 29, 2007, the son of Pierre Eliott Trudeau is named candidate to become a PLC deputy in the constituency of Papineau on the Island of Montreal. The following year, in the 2008 federal elections, he was elected for the first time and was re-elected in 2011. He then ran for the leadership of his party in 2012 and officially became leader of the Liberal Party in 2013.

Due to a strong desire for change among Canadians (red wave), he swept across Canada in 2015 and thus became the country’s 29th prime minister, increasing his number of MPs from 34 to 184. His government was then in the majority.

In 2019, he was re-elected, this time in a minority. He made a bet to become the majority again and therefore called elections in 2021, without success. Canadians once again entrusted him with a minority government with approximately the same number of deputies.

Mr. Trudeau is the 7th longest-serving prime minister in Canadian history. He is also no exception as he is the 11th prime minister to step down from office.
