The hurricane season causes episodes of heavy rain, which can generate sudden and localized rises in water, which are particularly dangerous. Also, the Government is launching a new information and awareness campaign on the intense rains and floods in the overseas territories of Guyana and Reunion from today, Monday January 6, and until to February 6, 2025. Its objective is to raise awareness among the population about natural risks and to promote individual resilience, but also to raise awareness of the risks linked to intense rains and floods within each overseas territory and to disseminate behaviors to adopt to guard against it.
However, we can question the fact that this campaign is not being carried out in Mayotte which saw the passage of cyclone Chido devastate the island and that only a few days ago the torrential rains which fell on Mamoudzou and its surroundings caused enormous flooding.
In any case, this campaign aims to provide broad information on the risks involved in order to avoid, for example, using your vehicle in the event of rising water, or the need to leave your children at school or at the nursery if they are safe and on instructions from the authorities.
Thus, as the campaign reminds us, “The best way to avoid danger is to prepare for it”, it is therefore essential that everyone adopts the right reflexes in the event of intense rain and/or floods. sudden:
– Get to safety, go upstairs or take refuge in a safe shelter.
– Limit your travel, whether on foot or by car. Stay away from watercourses.
– Stay informed and follow the instructions of local authorities
