Abdellah Bouchtat, member of the Alternative Amazighe group, described this initiative as a crucial step towards the integration of the Amazigh language into the country’s religious institutions. He stressed the importance of expanding the use of this language in ministry programs and encouraging imams to master it to better interact with Moroccan citizens, particularly minorities.
The translation of the Quran into Amazigh is seen as a strong gesture in favor of Amazigh culture and identity. Hussein Jihadi al-Baamrani had already published in 2003 a first translation of the Quran in Amazigh, the result of 12 years of research and efforts.
Imad Al-Manyari, president of the Research and Cultural Exchange Association, welcomed this move by the ministry as an opportunity to have an official and accessible translation. He also highlighted the importance of the works of Hussein Jihadi, particularly his translations of the Quran, works on the life of the Prophet and Sahih Al-Bukhari, which can inspire future initiatives.
Despite everything, the use of Amazigh remains limited in Morocco, with less than a third of the population speaking it today.
