130 000 euros. This is the tidy sum obtained by the municipality of Saint Anastasia (Gard), located a few kilometers north of Nimesfor the future renovation of the church of Russan.
The good news was made official, Thursday December 19, 2024. The small town is the only one in the department to be officially retained by the Heritage Lottery.
10%
This small village was preselected in September 2024 by the lottery led by host Stéphane Bern. This announcement constitutes a serious boost in the renovation project of the imposing building.
In fact, the National Loto alone will bring 10% of the total amount work planned on the Gard site.
Designed to spread over several yearsthe start of work should take place first half of 2026.
3 phases successives
Damage major had been noted inside the Gard church due to significant floods in the fall of 2002. The water had rushed into the church grounds, reaching up to 10 foot height in places.
Since then, the site remains constantly closed to the public.
After several years of study, the trois phases of the future project have been clearly defined. The most urgent thing is to put the church out of water once and for all. This happens through a complete renovation of the roof and existing facades.
10 ans !
The current paving must also be demolished. This will make it possible, in particular, to show the original floor built in the church.
Finally, all paintings present inside will also have to be restored. Most of them suffered greatly from the prolonged presence of water within the religious building.
Recently interviewed by our colleagues from France Bleu Gard Lozèrethe elected officials of the small Gard village estimate that this long “construction project could last until 10 ans and end in 2036 “. So we haven't finished hearing about the renovation this splendid church of 17th century.
