In this small town in North Mayenne, donating blood comes naturally. And no matter the date, the inhabitants of Villaines-la-Juhel are there, even on the eve of New Year's Eve, during the last collection organized in the multipurpose room.
Among the generous donors, Marion, 23, who gives blood as much as she can, four times a year, the maximum for a woman. And obvious for the Villainaise. “It’s free, it just takes an hour, and that’s it!”summarizes the young woman.
A little further on, Simon, 18, gives for the first time. “My parents have been giving for a long time, I had to get involved too, he explains, but I always wanted to give, because it’s important to give blood to save lives.”
That day, around sixty bags were taken, which is a little more than the previous time. A mobilization all the more notable in this last week of the year, where attendance at collection points shows a drop of 16% nationally.
“We have new donors at each collection, welcomes Gérard Aébi, president of the blood donors association of Villaines-la-Juhel. With 26 associations and numerous volunteers, Mayenne is recognized as one of the departments where there are the most donors in the Centre-Pays de la Loire region.
With nearly 11,000 donors, i.e. a generosity index of 5.31% (percentage of donors in the municipality compared to the number of people old enough to donate blood), Mayenne comes first among the regions' departments. Pays de la Loire. In 2023, 1,708 new donors will join the ranks.
“People who come to donate blood come with family or friends, explains Gérard Aébi. This partly explains the fact that there are always a few more donors, and especially loyal donors, who come back together.”
Mayenne, a department where samples are greater than the needs for hospitalized patients, which makes it possible to help other departments, and in particular the victims of Mayotte.
“The surplus goes to Paris, Marseille and the French Overseas Territories and apart from the disaster that happened in Mayotte, we regularly give pockets to other departments”explains Cécile Geslin, nurse at EFS Centre-Pays de la Loire.
You must be at least 18 years old and up to 70 years old. Samples can be taken from a donor weighing at least 50 kg, who has no medical contraindications.
During the collection, the donor completes a questionnaire intended for the doctor present on site. A man can donate blood six times a year and four times for a woman. Or a quantity of 450 ml per sample.
