A United Nations (UN) note recently announced that Senegal was beginning a process that could lead to its removal from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category within five years. This information, initially interpreted as an immediate withdrawal, required official clarification from the government.

In a press release published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and African Integration, it is specified that this development is part of a recommendation from the UN Committee for Development Policy. The process follows the guidelines of resolution A/RES/79/230 adopted on December 19, 2024 by the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the ministry, the five-year transition period will allow Senegal to prepare to leave this category without compromising its development program. “The Government is working on the development of a national strategy for a smooth transition, based on its new public policy framework entitled ‘Senegal 2050 National Transformation Agenda’”, indicates the press release.

The withdrawal of LDCs marks recognition of the economic and social progress made by Senegal. However, it also constitutes a major challenge, because it will lead to a reduction in the financial and technical advantages linked to this status, particularly in terms of development aid and preferential access to international markets.

The Senegalese government therefore underlines the importance of this transitional phase to strengthen economic resilience and guarantee a harmonious transition to a new status. This milestone aims to consolidate Senegal’s role as a key player in development on the African continent, while minimizing the risks linked to this transformation.
