In the Kenyan village of Mukuku, in the south of the country, there is excitement: a half-ton metal ring, obviously of space origin, crashed on Monday. It would be a space rocket component, announced the Kenyan space agency KSA.

The metal debris would have a diameter of approximately two and a half meters and weigh 500 kilograms. It has been recovered and is being analyzed. “Preliminary analyzes indicate that the fallen object is a separation ring from a launcher,” the agency said.

Danger of space debris

The object was supposed to burn up when it entered the earth’s atmosphere or fall into uninhabited areas. “This is an isolated case,” stressed the space agency.

This case reminds us of the danger linked to falling space debris. Last March, a block of metal from space ripped apart a house in the United States. It was part of a battery pack for the international space station, NASA said.

Risk less than 1 in 100 billion

A pallet of used batteries from the ISS had also flown over Germany. Several organizations, including the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), then informed of the existence of this battery pack and mentioned a low risk for the population.

As the European Space Agency (ESA) has reported, falling space debris has so far never caused any deaths. The risk of being hit by such an object is less than 1 in 100 billion.

As most of the Earth is covered by oceans, most space objects also end up in water, notes the DLR on its website.
