Bikers call it the CIF for “inter-line circulation”. In testing for three years, this device allowing motorcycle drivers to move up a line of vehicles in the event of traffic jams was due to end on December 31, 2024. It was finally extended for an additional six months. The Minister of the Interior published an order extending the experiment. Above all, a way to save time, while the newly appointed government is busy with many other issues.
This inter-lane traffic “is authorized on motorways and dual carriageways separated by a central reservation and with at least two lanes each, where the maximum authorized speed is greater than or equal to 70 km/h”, explains the State on its Légifrance website. Motorcycles and scooters are authorized to “overtake” only in traffic jam conditions.
Twenty-one departments concerned
The experiment started in 21 departments in July 2021: Bouches-du-Rhône, Haute-Garonne, Gironde, Hérault, Isère, Loire-Atlantique, Nord, Rhône (including the mainland lyonnaise), Var, Alpes-Maritimes, Drôme, Vaucluse, Pyrénées-Orientales and the eight departments of the region Île-de-France are concerned.
Already extended twice, this experiment was initially supposed to end on August 1, 2024 and “be the subject of an assessment”. Changes in government have obviously not made it possible to draw the conclusions of the experiment.
