Rabat continues to modernize its defense capabilities with the recent delivery of Bayraktar TB2 drones in August 2024, according to a summary published by Baykar, the Turkish aircraft manufacturer known for its aircraft for military use. This announcement marks a new stage in the kingdom’s strategic cooperation with the Istanbul company. This acquisition is also part of a surge in military expansion that began in 2021, when Morocco integrated these versatile drones into its arsenal.

However, Moroccan ambition does not stop there. In February 2025, Morocco expects the delivery of the Bayraktar Akıncı, a latest generation drone which promises to transform the kingdom’s operational capabilities. Designed to meet the needs of modern conflicts, this aircraft is distinguished by its dual artificial intelligence system and cutting-edge avionics technologies.

The Bayraktar Akıncı: a technological revolution

With an impressive wingspan of 20 meters and a payload capacity of 1,500 kilograms, the Bayraktar Akıncı is capable of carrying out complex air-to-ground and air-to-air missions. Thanks to ultra-precise guided munitions, such as MAM-T bombs, this drone is particularly suitable for prolonged operations at high altitude.

The integration of Akıncı into the Moroccan armed forces also marks a strategic turning point. Equipped with advanced radar, electronic warfare and intelligence systems, it will be able to monitor vast territories and provide continuous monitoring across national borders. These capabilities offer Morocco a decisive tool to guarantee the security of its borders and deter any potential threat.

An asset for regional defense and security

The acquisition of Akıncı illustrates Moroccan visions in terms of defense. This drone, a real strategic lever, will not only strengthen internal security, but will also increase the country’s weight in regional security dynamics. With a modernized and strengthened military posture, Morocco positions itself as a key player in the strategic balances in North Africa.

By integrating this cutting-edge technology, Rabat is banking on increased operational capabilities and reinforced military deterrence. Bayraktar Akıncı should thus play a central role in future Moroccan defense policies, while supporting its sovereignty and influence on the regional scene.
