The rebound in December was not enough to save the year. Registrations of new cars in France increased in December by 1.47% at an annual rate, according to data communicated on Wednesday by the Automobile Platform (PFA). 183,661 private vehicles were registered in France last month. Over the past year as a whole, the market, on the other hand, recorded an annual decline of 3.17%, with 1,718,416 registrations. It is therefore moving away again from the pre-COVID level (2.2 million registrations in 2019).
Registrations of new cars from the Stellantis group, which includes the Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel brands, fell by 6.65% in December compared to a year earlier. The Renault group (Renault, Dacia and Alpine brands) saw its registrations in France increase by 13.94% on an annual basis last month.

The market down 22% compared to 2019
In 2023, new car registrations in France increased by 16.07% – the strongest percentage increase in around ten years – a performance mainly attributed to a catch-up effect after disruptions linked to supplies. of chips and logistical difficulties.
This increase, however, did not eclipse the fact that in absolute volume, the market was still far from having returned to its pre-COVID levels. Compared to December 2019, registrations of new cars marked a decrease of 13.04% last month. Over the whole of 2024, compared to 2019, the market is down 22.39%, according to PFA data.
