Trial of Joël Le Scouarnec in Vannes
From February 24 and for an expected period of four months, Joël Le Scouarnec will be tried by the Mobihan criminal court in Vannes (Morbihan). The former surgeon is accused of having raped or sexually assaulted 299 patients, often minors at the time of the events.
Three years were necessary to organize this trial which the Justice itself describes as being “extraordinary”.
Employment: social plans…
On the employment front, 2025 risks seeing several waves of layoffs.
In Vannes, the Michelin factory will close by the end of the year. It employs 300 people.
The future is also more than uncertain for the 350 people who work at the Fonderie de Bretagne in Caudan. Without a buyer, the company risks closing its doors permanently. It must now be placed under the protection of the Commercial Court and enter into safeguard procedure. An extraordinary meeting of the CSE (social and economic committee) is scheduled for Monday January 6.
In Saint-Brandan (Côtes-d'Armor), the site of the emblematic brand “le Briochin” he is also experiencing his last moments. Too old, the premises, installed in a former dairy, no longer ensure the safety of the 49 employees, according to the Altaïr group. From March, the manufacturing of household products will be relocated to Hauts-d-France. The headquarters remains in Saint-Malo.
Near Rennes, the Stellantis group factory in Janais is starting the year by cutting 250 temporary positions due to the cessation of construction of the Peugeot 5008. A transitional situation, according to the car manufacturer. The new car model, the C5 Aircross Concept, must be assembled in Chartres-de-Bretagne (Ille-et-Vilaine) from September.

…and boats to build
In Lorient, Naval Group will deliver the first defense and intervention frigate to the French Navy. Then, the rate of construction of these military ships must accelerate at the rate of two new ones per year. Ultimately, seven other units will leave the site, which employs 2,000 people.
In a tense geopolitical context, the construction of two high seas patrol vessels should start at the shipyard Kership from Lanester, for delivery scheduled for 2026. Both ships were ordered by Montenegro.

In the Channel, Britanny Ferries plans to put its first hybrid-powered ferry into service in February. The “Saint Malo” will provide the link between the corsair city and Portsmouth in England, replacing the “Bretagne” which made its last crossing last November.
Furthermore, Saint-Malo will host its first boat show from April 24 to 27. The Nautic en Seine, which was to be held at the same time in Paris, has once again been postponed.
The nautical sector in Brittany represents 10,000 jobs.
Salmon, Bay of Biscay…: fishing bans
They, on the other hand, will have to stay at the dock.
For the second year in a row, vessels measuring more than 8 meters will not be allowed to fish in the Bay of Biscay between January 22 and February 20. One month ban to reduce dolphin captures.
Also a respite for the salmon, who will be able to take it easy all year round. Their fishing is suspended at sea as in rivers, for professionals and amateurs alike, in order to replenish a resource in very poor condition.

Renewal of chambers of agriculture
On the agricultural side, 2025 begins with elections. After a year of agricultural mobilization fueled by the prospect of this professional vote, farm managers, employees and retirees are called upon to choose their representatives to the Chambers of Agriculture for the next six years. The vote will take place from January 15 to 31, 2025. The results will be known between February 6 and 8. The three main unions (FDSE/JA, Peasant Confederation and Rural Coordination) have each submitted a list in the four departments. Outgoing president André Sergent is not a candidate in Finistère. It will therefore necessarily be a new president for the Region.

Big projects
The opening of a large hall in Quimper (3,500 seats) dedicated to sporting and cultural events at the start of the school year, the first sod for a new hospital in Quimperlé (Finistère), the largest equestrian hall from France to Hennebont (Morbihan) or a Himalayan footbridge over Lake Guerlédan in July…
Still quite a few big projects in perspective in Breton towns this year.
In Rennes, work aimed at discovering the Vilaine should begin in September. The first step will be to destroy this parking lot in the city center, which covers the river.
In Vannes, the footbridge should allow pedestrians and cyclists to access the future station from October.
In Finistère, Brest residents will begin to see the end of the construction site for the 2nd tram line. The trains must be delivered and then tested by next Christmas. The main work of art currently under construction, the second Schuman bridge must be completed.

Sport: Brest in the Champions League, possible sailing records and the cycling Tour de France

To capture the Jules Verne Trophy, held since January 26, 2017 by Idec Sport in 40 days 23 hours 30 minutes and 30 seconds, Sodebo Ultim 3 must cross the line at Ouessant before Thursday January 30, 2025 at 9:05 p.m.
This new year will also be very cycling-friendly in Brittany. The French elite track cycling championships are organized at the Loudéac velodrome (Côtes-d'Armor) from January 3 to 5.
2025 will see the return of the Grande Boucle on our roads. The Tour de France cyclist will host two stages first between Saint-Malo and Guerlédan on July 11, then departing from Saint-Méen-le-Grand towards Laval the next day. It will celebrate two Breton monuments: Bernard Hinault and Louison Bobet.
