As for the average maximum temperature, it was 15.4°C (normal: 14.7°C) and reached eighth place in the ranking.

Between 5 and 10 centimeters expected: snow should fall in Belgium in the coming hours

Remarkable facts in terms of temperatures: after February, March also had no frosty days. This is only the second time since observations began in 1892 that the months of February and March have had no days of frost.

In May, the absolute minimum temperature also set a new absolute record, not falling below 7.8°C (normal: 3.4°C). “This is a clear difference compared to the previous record of 2000 (6.6°C),” underlines the IRM.

The average minimum spring temperature also reached a new absolute record (measurements since 1892), at 8.1°C, largely beating the previous record of 2007 (7.4°C). Identical observation for the absolute minimum temperature of spring which reached the value of 1.1°C (normal: -2.5°C). This is only the second time that a spring has had a value for this parameter above 0°C, adds the institute.

Nationwide, the lowest temperature was recorded in Elsenborn (Bütgenbach). On January 21, the temperature there dropped to -15.5°C. The maximum temperature (36.0°C) was reached on August 12, in Zele. Although 2024 was a very hot year, no official heatwaves were recorded.

If it was not the hottest year in Uccle, last year was the wettest, continues the IRM. On November 27, the absolute record of 1088.5 mm from 2001 was broken. Finally, 1170.7 mm of precipitation fell in Uccle in 2024 (normal: 837.3 mm) and this annual amount fell in 209 days (normal: 189.8 days).

“The first Belgian storm of 2025 is born”: winds of up to 90 km/h expected in Belgium

This precipitation record is mainly explained by the large number of days of heavy precipitation (daily total of at least 20 mm). In 2024, we recorded 11 days (normal: 5.1 days). Only the year 2004 had more (12 days), the Institute further analyzes.

Finally, the sun shone for 1,367 hours 34 minutes (normal: 1,603 hours 43 minutes) in Uccle last year, making it the third darkest year for the current reference period. Only the months of January and August were sunnier than average, concludes the IRM.
