Sunday December 29, 2024, at 7 a.m., the alarm at the Gifi store in Pacé, near Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine), was triggered during a burglary attempt. Two men, aged 46, were caught in flagrante delicto by the gendarmes while they tried to force access to a safe.
Rapid intervention by the police
Alerted by the surveillance company, the gendarmerie quickly reacted by sending a patrol of three soldiers to the scene. As reported by Ouest-France, upon their arrival, the gendarmes made a discreet approach from the back of the store.
In the darkness, they faced a first gloved and hooded individual, holding a crowbar. Surprised, the man offered no resistance and immediately got on the ground before being arrested.
A second burglar absorbed in his crime
At the same time, a second gendarme headed towards an office where the deafening noise of a grinder was coming. Upon entering, he surprised another man, also aged 46, trying to cut open the safe door. Concentrated on his task, the latter had not heard the arrival of the police. Caught in the act, he was overpowered and handcuffed without difficulty.
A quick conviction for one of the suspects
Placed in police custody, the two individuals quickly faced justice. One of the burglars was presented to the Rennes public prosecutor's office and accepted an appearance procedure on prior admission of guilt (CRPC). He was sentenced to 18 months in prison, of which 9 months were suspended and 9 months could be adjusted. Additional sentences were also handed down, including a ban on appearing at the Gifi store and on any contact with his accomplice.
The other suspect awaits trial
The second burglar, who fell ill while in police custody, has not yet been tried. A subsequent court appearance is planned to rule on his case.
