New Year's Eve: reinforced road checks in the in the face of the increase in the number of deaths

As for every New Year's night, the police will be mobilized in the , with particular vigilance given at the end of the year to the fight against road offenses, in the face of the increase in mortality.

Increase in road checks

Numerous road checks will be carried out throughout the department, by the police and the gendarmerie. “Twenty-one checkpoints will be set up within the jurisdiction of the Orléans gendarmerie company, more than ten within the Montargis company, as many in Gien, and checks will also be carried out in Pithiviers “, explains General Philippe Guisset, second in command of the Centre-Val de gendarmerie region.

“If we have a message to send to people, it is to stay and sleep there if they have been drinking, and obviously not to drive,” insists Sophie Brocas, prefect of Loiret and the region.

This year, road mortality has started to rise again in the department, with 42 deaths (compared to 27 in 2023). An assessment which can only encourage the authorities “to strengthen controls, by analyzing accidents, the causes of them, the times when they occurred… and by identifying the sectors at risk”, continues Philippe Guisset.

Refusals to comply on the rise

Refusals to comply are also increasing. “It is worth remembering that in matters of criminal liability, the desire to flee control, even if it means endangering others, a police officer or a gendarme, is the most serious.” And it is also vain:

“With the means we have today, we almost systematically find the authors!”

In total, 200 gendarmes will be mobilized throughout the department, with the possibility of hiring a hundred more if necessary.

As for the national police, around fifty police officers will be deployed in Orléans, 25 in Montargis. Patrols will be on foot or by vehicle. “Particular vigilance will be given to the prevention of urban violence and vehicle fires,” lists Thierry Guiguet-Doron, the interdepartmental director of the Loiret national police.

Without forgetting domestic violence, “continuously increasing, in a very worrying manner”, concludes Sophie Brocas.
