Illegal sellers, who offer fruits and vegetables outside of any legal and health framework, at knockdown prices, are more and more numerous. They join the authorized stands, which causes tensions, as in Montpellier.

In Montpellier (Hérault), crates placed in a parking lot on the ground display fruits and vegetables sold completely illegally, four times a week. The products come from Spain for the most part without any control or label. Here, the price is negotiated. Clementines are sold at 1.50 euros per kilo, almost half the price of local shops, which follow strict rules.

Exasperated, the traders no longer hesitate to explain themselves to the sixty illegal traders. Just before Christmas, mortar fire was launched against these sellers. To stop this illicit trade, a new police intervention took place this weekend on the wild market, the sixtieth since the start of the year. The sellers come back systematically. The prefecture believes that we must go further. According to the City of Montpellier, the wild market costs 1 million euros in cleaning and police checks.
