Injured Canadian defenseman Matthew Schaefer will miss the remainder of the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Schaefer fell in the first period on Friday, in a 3-2 loss for his team against the Latvians.

He appeared to injure his left shoulder when he collided with the opposing net.

The 17-year-old Ontario native provided a goal and an assist in Canada’s 4-0 win over Finland on Thursday as both clubs opened the tournament.

Schaefer is expected to be called up fairly early in the National Hockey League draft next summer.

Schaefer is from Stoney Creek, just outside Hamilton.

He had 7 goals and 22 points in 17 games with the Erie Otters this season.
