The National Water and Forests Agency (ANEF) is expanding its national program for the preservation of threatened animal species and intensifying its fight against illegal hunting. In an interview with Le360Zouhair Amhaouch, head of the national parks and protected areas division at ANEF, details these operations which cover all regions of the Kingdom.
«We are working with Customs, the Royal Constabulary and the Royal Armed Forces to put an end to poaching and cross-border smuggling“, he explains. For example, the recent seizure of a large quantity of goldfinches in the regions of Oujda and Guercif demonstrated the extent of this illegal trade, which particularly transgresses Morocco’s eastern borders.
And to specify that, in accordance with law n°29.05 on the protection of wild flora and fauna and the control of their trade, it is formally prohibited to “capture, keep or sell these birds». «Any offense is punishable by a fine of between 5,000 and 20,000 dirhams per specimen, in addition to confiscation of the equipment used, including means of transport.», underlines our interlocutor.
Trafficking in parrots and other birds, particularly those from Latin America, is also severely punished, particularly within the framework of two international conventions. Therefore, ANEF has intensified its efforts to protect these endangered species, relying on multiple partnerships.

«The results have been encouraging since 2015, the date of entry into force of law 29.05», Says the manager. “We protect many categories of birds and sometimes use insemination to encourage their reproduction and increase their population in specially designed reserves.», he adds.
Known in Morocco under the names “Stayla” or “Mouknine”, the goldfinch is distinguished by its colorful plumage and its melodious song. Very popular, this bird is however the subject of active trafficking, which ANEF is working to combat to ensure its survival in the region.
