A first case of avian flu has been detected in Eure. Drastic measures have been put in place to prevent the spread of the virus.
A case of avian flu was detected in a poultry farm, at La Poterie-Mathieu, near Pont-Audemer (Eure). The prefect of the department has set a protection zone, within a radius of three kilometers around the outbreak, reported France 3 Normandy.
Eight municipalities are affected by this area: La Poterie-Mathieu, Épaignes, Lieuray, Le Noë-Poulain, Saint-Étienne-l'Allier, Saint-Georges-du-Vièvre, Saint-Siméon and Selles. A surveillance zone has also been declared, within a radius of ten kilometers around the outbreak. Many restrictions have been put in place. Poultry and captive birds must, for example, remain locked up. Any symptoms or animal deaths must be reported to the authorities. Means of disinfection at the entrance to buildings must be put in place. The removal of eggs for consumption from farms is prohibited.
The slaughter of animals has begun
Another ban: gatherings of birds and poultry at fairs, markets and flea markets. The sale of live poultry is also prohibited. Hunting waterfowl, game birds and the release of game birds are strictly prohibited.
According to France 3 Normandie, the slaughter of contaminated animals began this Saturday. “I know the breeder is devastated… They are slaughtering his entire breeding stock”reacted the mayor of La Poterie-Mathieu, where the virus was detected. The authorities are calling for maximum caution.
