Works: An environmental project for the Canal

The canal between Voyennes and Saint-Simonwhich has been closed to navigation for more than 20 years, is the subject of major works since spring 2023. The objective is to re-establish recreational navigation on this 16.5 km section and to create a cycle route to connect several towns and villages in the department. This project, amounting to 14 million eurosaims to boost tourism and preserve the environment of the East of the Somme.

Rehabilitation of locks and canal

The work in progress makes it possible to rehabilitate the four locks on the section, which had been closed for safety reasons. From 2023, the locks have been renovated and the towage platform (the path along the canal) is being widened to prepare for the creation of a cycle route. This work is necessary to reopen this part of the canal to boaters and to install a cycle path.

Creation of a cycle route

The project also includes the creation of a cycle route which will connect Saint-Quentinin Aisne, in Saint-Quentin-en-Tourmont, in the Bay of Somme. This cycle route will use the renovated towpath and allow tourists to discover the region on foot, by bike or by boat. Work on the cycle route is expected to last until 2026. This will strengthen the region's attractiveness for nature and active tourism enthusiasts.

Restoring natural spaces

In addition to the rehabilitation of infrastructure, the project also aims to restore the natural spaces around the canal. Trees that have become a safety hazard have been removed, and replanting is planned, with the aim of planting three trees for each tree felled. These actions are accompanied by environmentally friendly management of the banks and water to promote biodiversity.

The project is supported by several partners: the Somme Departmental Council, Voies navigables de (VNF), the State, the Hauts-de-France Region, as well as the Artois-Picardie Water Agency. In October 2024, an agreement was signed between the Department and VNF to ensure the long-term management of the canal. This will help maintain the infrastructure in good condition and support its tourism development.

Works in Ham

The town of Ham, which is on the route of the canal, benefits from particular attention. Developments are planned to improve access to the canal, with the creation of new services and amenities for visitors. The objective is to strengthen the place of the canal in the city and to highlight tourist sites such as the city center and the remains of the castle.

This project is part of a broader vision of development of the Somme Valley, with the desire to create an ideal place for river, cycling and hiking tourism. The reopening of the canal and the creation of the cycle route will contribute to the tourism dynamic of the region, while preserving its natural landscapes. Ultimately, this initiative should help develop the local economy and improve the quality of life of residents of the Eastern Somme.

This project is expected to be completed around 2026-2027, with an official reopening of the canal section to boaters and cyclists. This global project represents a real opportunity for the region and its inhabitants.
