A fortnight after the reopening of Notre-Dame, the Ministry of Culture announced this Friday, December 27 that the presbytery of the cathedral is now classified as a historic monument.

The presbytery of Notre-Dame de Cathedral, which reopened to the public in December after a devastating fire in 2019, is now classified as a historic monument, the Ministry of Culture announced this Friday, December 27.

The request for classification, initiated by Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, obtained a favorable opinion from the National Commission for Heritage and Architecture on November 14, a press release indicated.

Located at the foot of the cathedral, the presbytery, which is traditionally the priest's home, was designed in 1866 in the neo-Gothic style by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc as part of the renovation of the monument in the 19th century.

A classification that allows “consistent conservation”

Notre-Dame Cathedral and its sacristy had already been classified as historic monuments on the 1862 list.

“The Parisian cathedral complex, now classified in its entirety, will thus benefit from coherent conservation,” specified the ministry.

After five years of colossal work, Notre-Dame de Paris reopened on December 7, during a ceremony in the presence of several personalities including the American president-elect Donald Trump and the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

The Archbishop of Paris was thus able to celebrate the first Christmas Day mass in the cathedral on Wednesday since the fire of April 2019.
