Alberta Premier Danielle Smith will be at the swearing-in ceremony marking the start of Donald Trump’s second term as President of the United States on January 20.
In addition to attending the swearing-in, Danielle Smith plans to use her time in Washington to speak with various stakeholders in the energy sector, members of Congress and other government officials, says her press secretary, Sam Blackett.
This trip is part of the Prime Minister’s strategy to respond to the president-elect’s threat to impose tariffs of 25% on all products coming from Canada.
Danielle Smith fears in particular the effect that a tariff war could have on the economy and the purchasing power of the two countries. She says she favors the diplomatic approach.

Energy leads Canadian exports to the United States. According to Statistics Canada, 81% of crude oil produced in 2023 was exported, 97% to the United States, making Alberta the largest single supplier of oil and natural gas to that country.
