In Lyon, the Notre-Dame de Fourvière basilica is threatened with collapse, due to lack of work to maintain it. Despite its three million annual visitors, weaknesses in the four towers of the building, linked to bad weather and erosion, could lead to collapse due to infiltration into the structure of the religious building itself.
Lyon: Still 1.5 million euros to find
“The basilica was built in 1870 by the Lyonnais, explains Magaly Chatin, general delegate of the Fourvière foundation. We are a completely private site. Unfortunately, the condition of the towers, mainly, is deteriorating. It is urgent to intervene if we do not want to have a catastrophe.”
The foundation is looking for at least 2.5 million euros to carry out this work and has just launched an appeal for donations with the explicit name: “can you imagine Lyon without its basilica? “ “You go to the fourvieres.org website, and you can click on “support us”, in order to carry out the first emergency work. We have already collected more than a million euros. We need another 1.5 million euros.”
A sound and light show until December 31
Until December 31, a sound and light show is also taking place Fourvière in voicehighlighting this heritage. “It was created thanks to the region, it is offered on the pediment of the basilica. It is a real gift given to all visitors and to those who come to see their family. Fourvière is more than stones, it “is the symbol of Lyon. People come there, believers or not.”
The theme of the show is original: virgins from all over the world. “But also the women, it’s an ode to the feminine. We have virgins from different continents in the crypt. In the show, they are highlighted, as well as the women who worked for Lyon and for humanity.“An 18-minute show to be enjoyed despite the cold forecast for the city of Lyon.
