The last match of the year for Stade Malherbe Caen took place on Sunday December 22, 2024 in Guingamp. In the 32nd final of the Coupe de France, the Mlaherbistes wanted to finish on a good note before leaving for a short winter break. Facing another Ligue 2 club, the Rouge et Bleu fought with their weapons, but gave in in stoppage time and exited the competition (2-1).
Young people at the level
Gabin Tomé and Léo Miliner were both starters for this match at Guingamp and it was Didi Gaucho who played in the right lane of the Caen defense, in the absence of Valentin Henry and Lamine Sy, who however made his return in the group. The pace is quite low at the start of the match and little by little, SM Caen comes out of its shell to try to create danger. The first opportunity even came from Caen on a corner from Mathias Autret headed by Ntim but off target (8').
Guingamp raised the tone a little before the half-hour mark with a shot from Jacques Siwé well captured by Clémentia (21'). Jacques Siwé stands out by taking over a center from Hemia. Yannis Clémentia is beaten, but saved by his crossbar, and the two teams return to the locker room with a goalless draw (38′).
Last ten minutes of madness
Caen displays a more conquering face in the second period and they too will hit the posts. Brahimi first sees his left shot deflected by Niasse on the bar (48′). In the process, Mathias Autret takes a free kick to the right of the Guingamp area. The ball hits the right corner of the goal and frustrates the Caennais.
The opening score comes at the dawn of the last ten minutes when Hugo Picard launches Taylor Luvambo who deceives Clémentia forcefully at the near post (1-0, 80'). Nicolas Seube throws his last strength into the battle with the entry of Kalifa Coulibaly. Decisive entry since it is he who diverts the ball with his head towards Brahimi whose center finds Alexandre Mendy in the area who equalizes for SM Caen (1-1, 85′). Unfortunately, the last moments turned in favor of the locals and Hugo Picard, already decisive in the championship against Malherbe, he deceived Yannis Clémentia in stoppage time to offer qualification to Guingamp (2-1, 92′).
SM Caen ends its 2024 year with another negative result, but the face displayed was much better than against Dunkirk in the championship. These hopes will have to be confirmed after the truce and the first match of the year, January 3, 2025, against Clermont.
