It was under the snow that Clermont Foot 63 saw its journey in the Coupe de France come to an end at the end of a cruel penalty shootout in Sochaux (0-0, 5-3 tab). A look back at the last meeting of this year 2024.
The Clermontois knew what to expect against a solid Sochaux team, especially at home. From the second minute of play, Diaby showed CF63's intentions with a shot at the edge of the area, but it did not worry the opposing goalkeeper. Sochaux responded a few minutes later with an off-center shot from Michel which narrowly missed the target, these were the two flashes of a first quarter of an hour which served as an observation round between the two teams.
Little by little, the Clermontois put their foot on the ball and seek to build, in particular by passing through the left side of Yoël Armougom, the former Sochaux often finding himself in a central position. In the 25th minute, it was Jérémy Jacquet who showed initiative by crossing the field alone, with the ball at his feet. He manages to serve Diaby who turns around and unleashes his shot, without finding the target.
To a long shot from Da Silva which forced the opposing goalkeeper to work, FCSM was quick to respond. Although he had not been called upon much since the start of the game, Guivarch intervened on a point-blank shot from Drammeh, quickly finding himself on the ground to ward off the danger. A very important reflex stop at this moment of the game (36th).
Just before the break, Diop is entitled to a goal ball, served in his race by Diaby. Unfortunately, the Clermontois misses his duel against Patouillet, Sochaux's last rampart (44th). At halftime, the two teams returned to the locker room with a goalless draw.
Clermontois stopped in their tracks
The match resumed at a false pace and the Clermontois almost got surprised by their opponent, that was without counting on a saving tackle from Magnin a few centimeters from his goal line (54th). Our captain of the day shines again, offensively this time, with a well-executed shot which goes to nothing off the Sochaux post (61st).
While the Clermontois pushed, Ousmane Diop was excluded by the referee from the match for an uncontrolled gesture in a duel with Mayela. A fact of play which therefore leaves Batlles' men at 10 against 11 (75th). The Rouge et Bleu know it, they will have to be solid at the end of the match, like Guivarch who keeps his clean sheet with a long shot (78th).
Outnumbered, the Auvergnats held on but were no longer able to worry the opposing defense. After 6 minutes of added time, qualification must be decided on penalties.
At the end of the suspense, this cruel penalty shootout (5-3 tab) marks the end of Clermont Foot 63's journey in the Coupe de France this season. Now it's time for a truce to come back stronger in 2025.
