Kings and Heroes Recital Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian Countertenor Royal Opera Orchestra Théotime Langlois de Swarte Conductor In Handel's work, the characters played by castrati in operas were essentially beings of power: sovereigns like the Kings of Egypt Ptolemy or Alexander, Roman Emperors like Julius Caesar or Otto, or even heroes like Rinaldo and Orlando (the knights Renaud and Roland) or the jealous Polinesso! In a journey going from Handel's debut in Italy with Agrippina (1709), to his London triumphs of the 1720s and 1730s, the countertenor Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian resurrects these oversized lyrical characters, embodied by the Primo Uomo: the castrato contralto Senesino serves as the pivot of this anthology which also evokes the castrati Nicolini and Antonio Baldi. In the heroic vein, anger and amorous spite are the strongest dramatic moments written by Handel: here they are admirably brought together by a very great singer of our time, whose name could be – who knows – that of a King or of a Handelian hero: Paul-Antoine! Georg Friedrich Handel (1685-1759) Rinaldo: Overture Giulio Cesare: “Va tacito e nascosto” Rinaldo: “Venti, turbini” Tolomeo, Re d'Egitto: “S'è ristretto fra catene” Berenice: “Sù Megera, Tisifone, Aletto » Tolomeo, Re d'Egitto: « Stille amare » Agrippina « Otton, Otton! … Voi che udite » Violin Concerto in Bb Major HWV 288 (Andante, Adagio, Allegro) Giulio Cesare: “Se in fiorito ameno prato” Ariodante: “Dover, giustizia, amor” Amadigi di Gaula: “Pena tiranna” Orlando: “Già l’ebro mio ciglio” Tolomeo Re d’Egitto: “Se un solo equel core”
