Stores that are a century old of existence, in any city, it becomes very rare. Especially when it's the same family that runs it. So when one of them closes, it’s an event. This will be the case in the Tarn within a few weeks.

This is the store American Stocks of in the city center, a stone's throw from Place Jean-Jaurès.

After the First World War

The name “American Stocks” has not appeared in large letters above the window for a long time, but it is still written, in smaller size, on one of the columns at the entrance. It takes you back to a distant past where French traders collected stocks of clothing from the other side of the Atlantic to to sell them thanks to a clientele eager for new products not found elsewhere. This was the case almost everywhere in .

The Castres store has opened in 1919, just after the First World War. With at its head Eugene Dufettelle. He will pass the store on to his son Jean. Who himself will pass it on to his son Christian.

Three generations of Dufetelle

With his wife Claudine, they presided over the destiny of the store for a time before Christian died, leaving Claudine alone in charge. Except that today, the sixty-year-old is taking her retirement.

And the ready-to-wear store is therefore in total liquidation until February 6, 2025.

Even if it is rumored on site that the store could experience a new life with a buyer, a page in the commercial history of Castres turns with the end of the Dufetelle saga.
