Faithful to his reputation as a restorer of fairy tales, Jean-Christophe Maillot strips Cinderella of its sugar coating and restores Perrault's text to its original strength thanks to a deeper approach: how the memory of those who have disappeared shapes the future of those who remain?
The theme of the prince marrying the commoner (a factory of disenchantment for entire generations) disappears here in favor of a reflection on mourning, a theme which runs through the choreographer's repertoire (and which culminates with Vers Pays Sage). Beyond a reflection on mourning, Jean-Christophe Maillot's Cinderella is also a fierce painting of a society dripping with artifice. Distraction is proportional to idleness and the two superintendents of pleasure
of the palace are not too much to entertain a moribund court, asphyxiated by boredom. When Cinderella enters, with the precious help of the fairy, she stands out for her simplicity. She doesn't need accessories to be beautiful. Even the famous vair slipper is here replaced by a bare foot covered with fine gold powder. Cinderella's bare foot becomes the symbolic object of the entire ballet. It symbolizes both the stripping of the young girl and this part of the body without which dance cannot exist. The foot is the pivot of choreographic art, its support and its flight. Now, this is what Cinderella is about. This ballet tells us the story of a simple and honest young woman who discovers a world that is not.
