Health insurance, Credit Suisse, Bilateral III: the three keywords of the week

1. The surge in health insurance subsidies is debated in the canton of Vaud

The canton of Vaud, which stands out for the establishment of a ceiling limiting health premiums to 10% of household income, is facing a continued increase in subsidies paid by the State. Between 2016 and 2023, the latter jumped by 51.6%, to 803.7 million francs, slower than partial subsidies, which increased by 70.2% to 432.8 million. In the 2024 budget, these were estimated at 435.8 million francs and an additional credit request of 50 million was submitted to the Finance Commission to cover these expenses.

2. Sinking of Credit Suisse: the authorities pinned down by the CEP

The parliamentary commission of inquiry (CEP) responsible for examining the management of the emergency merger between Credit Suisse and UBS has retained five essential points from the outcome which saw the bank with two veils pass under the flag of its rival with three keys on March 19, 2023.

3. Bilateral III, when will there be a little enthusiasm from the Federal Council?

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the “historic” moment of the new agreements between Switzerland and the European Union (EU) on Friday in Bern. She did not make a single negative remark on the period of more than three years necessary to renegotiate the parts of the old framework agreement sector by sector, and to add new areas. Better, she considered that agreements on an equal footing are part of the strengths of a Union that must be defended in an increasingly tense geopolitical context. Rather than emphasizing many technical aspects, she appealed to positive emotions and noted the potential for the development of relations between the EU and Switzerland.
