Dakar, Dec 20 (APS) – The state of Senegalese Basketball is not as critical as some would suggest, assured the National Technical Director (DTN), Raoul Toupane, pointing out that the men’s and women’s national teams are in ”reconstruction” to regain their place on the continental level.
”Senegalese basketball is not as moribund as some people want us to believe,” he said in an interview with APS.
Taking stock of the year, on the eve of the celebration of the second edition of World Basketball Day, the National Technical Director indicates that Senegal is on “the right track”, despite aspects to improve.
Raoul Toupane welcomed the presence of Senegalese players or players playing in the local championship at the second edition of the Women Basketball League Africa (WBLA), which ended last week, at the Marius Ndiaye stadium in Dakar.
”Of the 11 teams present in Dakar, 9 had Senegalese players from the Senegalese championship. We are on the right track. It’s true, there are things to improve,” underlined the DTN.
Senegalese Ndioma Kane, who played with Al Ahly, unfortunate finalist, was named best player in the WBLA.
The National Basketball Director pleaded for Senegalese clubs to participate in continental club competitions.
Addressing the question of national teams, Raoul Toupane said he was “satisfied” with their development during 2024.
”For the national teams, we are in reconstruction, both for boys and girls,” he insisted.
Senegal, one of the most successful countries on the continent, has been in bad shape for several years.
The men’s national team has not won the Afrobasket since 1997. The Lionesses’ last victory dates back to 2015.
