The World Bank recently approved $250 million in financing to transform Morocco’s agri-food system. The initiative focuses on climate-smart agricultural practices such as no-till farming and soil and water conservation.
This program aims to strengthen the climate resilience of agriculture, a vital sector representing 16% of GDP and 19% of exports in 2023, but seriously affected by successive droughts. Declining yields, particularly in rainfed crops, highlight the need for urgent adaptation in the face of climate change.
This initiative supports the expansion of organic farming over 25,000 hectares and improves food safety standards in 1,200 outlets. The objective is to stabilize yields, increase farmers’ income and guarantee better nutritional quality for 1.36 million beneficiaries, including 120,000 farmers.
Complementing this funding, a $5 million grant from the Liveable Planet Fund will support smallholders in their transition to sustainable practices. This program, in line with the national strategy “Generation Green 2020-2030”, aims to make Morocco a regional model in terms of resilient and sustainable agriculture.
