The Jerusalem Post reveals Israel’s role in the adoption of the resolution recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara by the Paraguayan Parliament. Indeed, this decision comes after discussions led by Amir Ohana, Speaker of the Israeli Knesset, during recent meetings with Paraguayan officials, including President Santiago Peña and the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Raúl Latorre.
A fervent defender of Israeli-Moroccan relations, Amir Ohana, son of Moroccan immigrants, was one of the main architects of this rapprochement. His historic visit to Morocco in 2023 marked a turning point, with the official announcement of Israel’s recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. This symbolic gesture was accompanied by the updating of the official map of his office, reflecting this decision.
During discussions with Paraguayan authorities, Ohana pleaded for the strategic importance of Western Sahara for Morocco and encouraged Paraguay to adopt a position similar to that of Israel. The result was not long in coming: resolution 796, introduced by Raúl Latorre, supports Moroccan sovereignty, while urging the Paraguayan executive to defend this position in international forums.
