Mapping 2023-2024: Provide a comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the spatial distribution of economic activities at the national, regional, provincial and municipal levels. This was revealed on Tuesday during a press conference held in Rabat at the HCP headquarters on the occasion of the presentation of the RGPH 2024 results. The details.
The number of active economic establishments reaches 1,304,564 throughout the national territory during the period 2023-2024, according to a map carried out as part of the census operations carried out by the High Commission for Planning. As the same source notes, this is an exhaustive census with georeferencing of economic establishments in the public and private sectors and operating in premises for professional use (LUP) as well as weekly souks. The aim is to provide a complete and updated image of the spatial distribution of economic activities at the national, regional, provincial and municipal levels, as well as information on the structure and characteristics of the different economic sectors. Thus, the number of for-profit establishments exceeds 1.13 million, or nearly 86.6%, followed by public service establishments 147,062 (11.3%) and associative establishments operating in independent premises 27,481 (2. 1%). At the regional level, 21% of these establishments are concentrated in the Casablanca-Settat region, followed by the Marrakech-Safi region (13%) and the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region (12.8%).
Annual growth of 2% of economic establishments
During the period 2023-2024, the number of for-profit economic establishments increased, thus achieving an average annual increase of 2% compared to the first economic census carried out in our country in 2001/2002. These establishments permanently employed 3.6 million people, according to the same indicators, or an average of 3 permanent workers per establishment. “The sector that uses the most labor during this period is that of services, which represents 36.0% of the total workforce employed in all targeted sectors of activity, followed by industry (29.8%), commerce (29.6%) and construction (4.6%),” indicates the same source. Unsurprisingly, the urban area is home to 86.9% of the for-profit establishments identified (compared to 13.1% located in the rural area). The Casablanca-Settat region occupies first place in terms of the number of economic establishments in the urban world with 23.6% of the total establishments located. It accounts for 34.3% of the workforce employed in the entire national urban area. The Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region comes in second position with 14.1% and 14.4% of the workforce employed in the entire national urban area. On the rural side, the Marrakech-Safi region comes first in the concentration of rural economic establishments in the Kingdom, i.e. 21.3% of the total number of establishments and 14.6% of the total employed assets.
Commerce, industry, services…
By type of activity, the commerce sector occupies more than half of for-profit establishments. “With more than half of the establishments (52.0%), the commerce sector constitutes the largest concentration of economic establishments in the Kingdom. It is followed by the services sector which represents 30.8%. In other words, the tertiary sector occupies first place in the configuration of the economic fabric, both in terms of establishments (82.8%) and jobs (65.6%),” underlines the same source. Regarding the industrial sector, it represents 13.7% of the total for-profit economic establishments, which places it in third position in the concentration of economic establishments in the country. This sector has nearly 1.1 million permanent jobs, or nearly a third (29.8%) of the total workforce employed in all for-profit economic establishments operating on the national territory. . As for the construction sector, the data from the mapping of economic establishments demonstrate its low participation both in terms of the number of establishments (3.5%) and the number of employees (4.6%).
Small structures represent 97% of economic establishments
The economic fabric is mainly occupied by micro-establishments. “Establishments with fewer than 10 permanent workers (97%) employ 54% of the total workforce. While establishments with 10 or more employees represent nearly 3% of the total establishments and account for 46% of the total number of permanent employees,” the census data specifies.
10% of establishments run by women
The share of establishments chaired by women remains low. “The results of this census showed that 10% of establishments are managed by women, this rate reached 13.2% in the region of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, followed by the two regions of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab and Laâyoune -Sakia El Hamra with 12.6% and 12.5% respectively. Establishments run by women employ more than 281,300 permanent workers, or 7.8% of total employment in establishments,” notes the same map, noting that 91% of establishments run by women are small, occupying less than 4 people. If we think by sector of activity, 14.6% of establishments in the service sector and 13.5% in the industrial sector are managed by women.

More than 147,000 public service establishments identified
Distribution: The mapping of economic establishments reveals that Morocco has 147,062 public service establishments. “The distribution of these establishments by region in Morocco highlights their concentration in five regions, representing more than two thirds of the total. The Marrakech-Safi region is the most represented with 18.8%, followed by Souss-Massa (12.9%), Fès-Meknes (12.8%), Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima (11.8%) and Casablanca-Settat (10.5%).
The regions of Béni Mellal-Khénifra (8.7%) and Rabat-Salé-Kénitra (7.4%) have intermediate proportions,” reports the same source. And added: “Depending on the type, nearly 39% of these establishments are classified as socio-cultural facilities. Education and training establishments represent 23.6%.
