“Your gut flora is as individual as your fingerprint. But it says a lot more about your health.” The proposal is as mysterious as it is flattering. And comes from a Swiss company marketing “direct-to-consumer” intestinal microbiota tests online, without a medical prescription.

Anyone can, provided they spare around 200 francs (minimum), send a sample of feces and receive a detailed assessment of their microbial diversity. And thus know if the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes and other bacterial species in our intestines are out of balance – a situation called “dysbiosis”. Does the interest in metagenomic analysis of microbiota DNA without medical prescription really live up to its promises? In a word, no. Here's why.
