As its former mayor, Joël Bruneau, predicted, Caen (Calvados) has surpassed the mark of 108,000 inhabitants. This is confirmed, among others, by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) this Thursday, December 19, 2024, by publishing the figures from its latest census.
Caen less dynamic than Rouen
Behind Le Havre and Rouen, Caenwith 108,400 inhabitants officially recorded on January 1, 2022, remains the 3rd city of Normandy for its population.
Rouen, the regional capital, gained more than 1,000 inhabitants on average each year over the period measured, between 2016 and 2022, to now stand at 116,331 inhabitants. In Le Havre, the decline continues. The port city has lost nearly 4,000 souls in five years. To finish at 166,462 inhabitants, according to INSEE.
For its part, Caen is consolidating its demographic recovery. Its population has increased by 500 inhabitants per year on average. Better still, the trend is accelerating. After falling to its lowest census of the decade at the start of 2017, with 105,354 inhabitants, the number rose to an estimated 105,512 (as of January 1, 2021), 106,230 (as of January 1, 2022) and 107,250 (as of January 1, 2023). ).
The strongest growth in Calvados in the Caen area
In the Calvadosthe prefecture reinforces its leading role. Of the five Normandy departments, it is “ the only one to benefit from significant growth of its population (+ 0.3% on average per year, or around 1,800 additional inhabitants on average per year),” indicates INSEE.
The largest declines are seen far from Caen, on the Côte Fleurie, in Houlgate (290 fewer inhabitants than in 2016), Honfleur (-980 inhabitants), Villers-sur-Mer (-260 inhabitants), and in Condé- in Normandy (- 650 inhabitants).
THE plus fortes progressions are for several municipalities in the agglomeration. Bourguébus stands at over 5% per year between 2016 and 2022 (i.e. 650 more inhabitants in five years), Carpiquet at over 4.8% per year (+800 inhabitants). Mondeville gained 480 people over the period and, above all, Fleury-sur-Orne, 790.
Target 115,000 inhabitants in Caen?
Despite the cessation, or rather the pause, of the major program of 2,500 housing units on the Presqu’île, the demographic rebound of Caen should continue.
Without taking into account the dynamic of job creation, other projects, such as the reconversion of the former CHR Clemenceau, the transformation of the Mont-Coco area or, to a lesser extent, the ambitious Cascades program, should enable the city of eyeing the bar, “realistic” for the deputy Joël Bruneau,115 000 habitants maxi.
