The Pyrénées-Orientales on yellow alert. The department is monitored by forecasters from Weather this Thursday, December 19 and Friday, December 20. As News Perpignan announced it to you a few days ago, strong winds are expected in the coming hours in the Catalan country. Here’s what to expect.

A strong gust of wind is coming

We warned you. The forecasts for the start of the week will indeed be confirmed in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The department will be swept by storm Dioniso in the coming hours. Of strong gusts of wind are expected on the Roussillon plain, the coast, but also inland, up to the mountains.

If this sudden phenomenon will not be as powerful as the Darragh storm (184km/h recorded at Cap Béar, editor’s note), occurred at the beginning of the month, it’s a serious tramontane that will blow over the Catalan country.

For the moment, only the two departments of Corsica have been placed on orange vigilance by Weather France. The Pyrenees-Orientales should remain on yellow alertuntil this Friday noon, at least.

Gusts over 130km/h

Concretely, the wind has already started to pick up this Thursday at the beginning of the afternoon. And the northeast flow will continue to strengthen throughout the afternoon and evening. We expect gusts of wind around 100km/h in Perpignanand well beyond in the most exposed areas of the department.

The 130km/h mark should easily be reached in Fenouillèdes, on the Côte Vermeille or even on the massif of Canigo and the other Catalan peaks. The night will be a little rough and the wind will pick up again this Friday morning:

A fireworks display already canceled

In the midst of Christmas festivities, many municipalities will be forced to postpone or cancel their events planned for the next few hours. This is particularly the case in Saint-Cyprien, which had to give up its fireworks and entertainment, planned for this Friday, December 20.

Other events should suffer the same fate, everywhere in the Pyrénées-Orientales.

The tramontana will stay until Christmas

Especially since the start of the Christmas holidays will be marked by the tramontana. If the strong gusts expected this weekend should ease over the weekend, the wind will still remain fairly strong for several days, with even further strengthening possible at the start of the week.

The tramontane will remain present in the department until December 24 and New Year’s Evespecifies Weather France.
