The world of “The Lion King” continues to amaze young and old. 30 years after the original cartoon, which attracted 10.1 million spectators to French cinemas, and while the musical was applauded by more than 3 million French people, since yesterday, movie fans have been able to discover the film “Mufasa: The Lion King” at the cinema. This is the prequel to the live-action film “The Lion King”, a huge success of 2019 with also 10 million admissions, which looks back on Mufasa’s youth and the origins of his rivalry with his brother Scar. Directed by Barry Jenkins (“Moonlight”), the feature film is carried by the voices of Beyoncé, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino), Mads Mikkelsen and Seth Rogen, while in France, they are Tahar Rahim, Jamel Debbouze and Alban Ivanov who is responsible for overtaking Mufasa, Timon and Pumba. Former “Star Academy 2” candidate Aurélie Konaté lends her voice to the character of Sarabi.

Four times less than the previous one…
And if the previous opus had totaled 1.6 billion dollars in revenue worldwide, it seems that the sequel will be far from achieving the same result. Indeed, the first figures have just fallen for France, and they are less impressive than expected. In one day, “Mufasa: The Lion King” totaled 142,674 admissions on 683 French screens. We are a long way from the 630,478 moviegoers gathered on the day of the release of the live-action remake of “The Lion King” in 2019, on a similar number of screens, but in the middle of summer… In one week, “The King Lion” 2019 generated 3.2 million seats sold. Will its sequel still exceed one million entries after seven days? Nothing is less certain… It remains to be seen the results on American soil, where the film with a budget of 200 million dollars is released this Friday.
This surprising poor performance is reminiscent of “Joker: Folie à deux” last October. After the immense success of the first part, with more than a billion dollars in revenue, the film with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga was panned by the press and had a very mixed reception in theaters: it only collected 206 million dollars in revenue (for a budget estimated at 200 million) and convinced only one million French moviegoers, compared to 5.6 million for the first.
