We are at Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. The most expensive commercial artery in the country in terms of rent. Not far from the station, on both sides of this upscale street, two opticians face each other: Fielmann and Götte (“the gods”, in German). The offers of the two companies are diametrically opposed. The German one prides itself on selling glasses from 60 francs while the Zurich one, which focuses on exclusive brands, costs more like thousands of francs.
“Both actors reflect the two extremes of the industry well. The prices are very different and in the end it is the customer who chooses,” points out Dominic Ramspeck, of the Optiquesuisse association, defending the interests of independent opticians who have no more than eight stores.
