The port of Béjaïa expands with the commissioning of the first section of the new quay

The first phase of the project to build a quay at the port of Béjaïa was commissioned this week, on schedule, by the wali of Béjaïa, Kamel Eddine Kerbouche. This project is part of a program to develop and extend the port infrastructure.

The company and the design office responsible for carrying out and monitoring the work are now focusing on the second phase, which consists of building a 184 linear meter quay. This project, costing 2.5 billion dinars, will be completely completed in the near future.

Once completed, the new dock, called “Quai de La Casbah”will measure 350 linear meters and will be intended, among other things, for the activity of the Amizour zinc and lead mine. One of the major objectives of this project is to relieve the State coffers, which pay compensation of “$30,000 per day to commercial ships stranded at sea, for long stays, waiting for their goods to be unloaded”. In addition to this, the project aims to improve the capacities and activity of the Béjaïa Port Company (EPB).

Thanks to this new 350-meter quay, the port will be able to accommodate around twenty boats per month. “This quay will also be dedicated to the commercial activity of the mine which transports mining products from the port”specified the wali of Béjaïa, according to the newspaper El Watan.
