The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar FAYE, chaired this Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Palace of the Republic. On the agenda, several major subjects linked to the promotion of historical heritage, town planning, housing, as well as strategic directives for the year 2025.
Highlighting national heritage: tribute to Lat Dior
The Head of State returned to the inauguration, on December 12 in Thiès, of the monument dedicated to Lat Dior Ngoné Latyr DIOP, on the occasion of the centenary of his disappearance. This ceremony, marked by an exceptional mobilization of local populations, illustrates the importance given by the government to the preservation of national memory.
The President expressed his desire to rehabilitate historical heritage and further integrate national heroes into the naming of public places. He thus instructed the Prime Minister and several ministries to relaunch the scientific rewriting of the general history of Senegal and to promote emblematic sites such as Gorée and Carabane.
Towards decent housing and controlled urbanization
Urban planning and housing policy occupied a central place in the discussions. In the perspective of Vision Senegal 2050, the President insisted on the importance of coherent territorial planning, the modernization of municipalities and the promotion of accessible social housing.
Among the key measures:
- An update of urban master plans for all municipalities;
- Strict application of architectural and construction standards;
- The integration of green spaces and landscaping in urban projects.
The Head of State also set the objective for 2025 of making decent housing a national cause, with monthly monitoring of the progress of this policy. He called for an acceleration of social housing construction programs, in particular through land audits and urban restructuring plans.
Senegalese-Gambian Cooperation and General Policy Declaration
The Prime Minister announced that his General Policy Declaration (DPG) would be held on December 27, 2024, in accordance with the Constitution. He also informed the Council of his visit to The Gambia on December 19 and 20, to co-chair a bilateral meeting and an economic forum aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
Highlights of departmental communications
Ministers shared progress in various sectors:
- Preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games;
- The peanut marketing campaign and flood recession crops;
- Implementation of a National Targeted Financing Strategy for the social and solidarity economy.
Adoption of legislative and regulatory texts
The Council examined and adopted a draft decree organizing the Ministry of African Integration and Foreign Affairs.
This meeting of the Council of Ministers reflects a clear ambition: to strengthen the historical, economic and social framework of Senegal, while laying solid foundations for inclusive and sustainable development.
