SENEGAL-HABITAT / Bassirou Diomaye Faye asks the government to accelerate programs to promote social housing – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Dec 18 (APS) – The President of the Republic recommended to members of the government, Wednesday, December 18, to accelerate the execution of programs to promote social housing, to facilitate access to land and real estate ownership with the assistance of the banks, and to make decent housing “a national cause” from next year.

”The head of state [évoqué] the urgency of accelerating deployment […] programs to promote social housing,” indicates today’s press release from the Council of Ministers.

He adds that Bassirou Diomaye Faye ”asked the Prime Minister to relaunch social housing construction programs in areas [où existent] subdivisions, development plans and occupancy titles officially validated after land and real estate audits.

”The government will also have to propose sustainable solutions to accelerate the promotion of decent housing, through the design of consensual restructuring and urban renovation plans, and tackle the modernization of housing in rural areas.” , the text continues.

According to the same source, Mr. Faye invited the Prime Minister and other members of the government to ”make decent housing a national cause, from the year 2025”.

The Minister of Urban Planning and the Secretary of State for Housing are invited to present to the government monthly the level of execution of the national housing policy.

Facilitate access to land and real estate ownership

The press release from the Council of Ministers announces that “it has [été] asked the Prime Minister and the Minister responsible for Urban Planning to set, for the next three years, the mission letter and the intervention framework of the Land Development and Urban Restructuring Company, an entity which must have resources adapted land and financial assets, based on a viable economic model”.

Furthermore, ”it is necessary to evaluate the Guarantee Fund for access to housing and the application of the orientation law […] of November 8, 2016 on social housing, with the Social Housing Fund system,” he continues.

”The government will also work to revive urban centers and concerted development zones, to facilitate access to land and real estate ownership, with the assistance of banks and financial institutions. On this momentum, primary importance will be given to the development […] of the urban center of Diamniadio and Lake Rose, which are beginning to host world-class hotel infrastructure,” we read in the press release from the Council of Ministers.

”In view of the rise in power of the tourism sector, he adds, the President of the Republic asked the Prime Minister, the Minister responsible for Local Authorities and the Minister of Tourism to ensure the control of urban development tourist areas of Senegal.”
