Three “significant procedures“, carried out since April for the oldest, and relating to acts of violence committed on the provincial road of Saint-Louis, have seen notable progress in recent days, indicates the prosecution.

Earlier this week, two men were arrested for participating in eight carjackings between May 27 and July 7. One of them also admitted to having participated, in October, in the destruction by fire of a stolen vehicle as well as the receipt of a mobile phone which he knew came from a theft of a vehicle. The two defendants, aged 18 and 19 and residing in Saint-Louis, were brought before the prosecution on December 17 and placed in pre-trial detention while waiting to appear before the criminal court on December 20.

The second case concerns attempted murder of gendarmes dating from June 25. A 36-year-old man from Touho was arrested and placed in pre-trial detention for shooting at gendarmes using a hunting rifle. Two people had already been indicted in this case at the beginning of September.

The last procedure concerns the attack on a motorcyclist on April 9 on the RP1. While she was on her way to Nouméa, the victim was blocked when crossing Saint-Louis by a group of around fifteen people who hit her several times, notably with a log, before leaving with his motorbike towards the tribe. The medical examination will reveal injuries justifying a total incapacity for work for ten days associated with significant psychological trauma. One of the alleged perpetrators, aged 20, was presented to the investigating judge on December 8 and placed in pre-trial detention. Four people are now indicted in this case. The prosecution emphasizes that the investigation is continuing to identify the last perpetrators of this violence.
