A 68-year-old man and his 71-year-old partner will appear this Thursday, December 19 before the Dijon court, accused of animal cruelty. They are suspected of having threw kittens out of their car door on the move in downtown Dijon.
The facts date back to July 7, when a motorist, witness to the scene, immediately alerted law enforcement. Thanks to recordings from video surveillance cameras, the suspects’ vehicle was quickly located. Unfortunately, the kittens did not survive to the violence of the shock.
The couple prosecuted for acts of cruelty
The couple is being prosecuted for serious abuse or acts of cruelty leading to the death of domestic animals. The Stéphane Lamart association, dedicated to the defense of animal rights, has become a civil party in this case. His lawyer, Maître Patrice Grillon, will plead during the hearing.
Stéphane Lamart, president of the association of the same name, reacted strongly: “The couple claims that the cats would be fallen from their engine. It’s quite surprising: at the time it happened, it was summer and it’s rare for cats to go to this place at this time of year to warm up. They do it in winter. And even if they do, the cats are burned or torn to pieces. » For the president of the association, “the sad reality is there, I hope that justice not going to buy this strategy. »
The association hopes for an exemplary conviction. “If these people did not want to have reproduction, that they sterilize their female ! » insists Stéphane Lamart, emphasizing the need to empower pet owners.
We hope that justice will be able to live up to this horror
“This is not an isolated case”
This tragedy is sadly reminiscent of other recent cases of animal abuse in France. For example, in November 2024, a couple was tried in Territoire-de-Belfort for having kept dozens of animals in unsanitary conditions in their home. Twenty dead cats, including 14 frozen kittenshad also been found by the gendarmes, alongside 22 cats, 7 dogs and 4 birdsalive but mistreated.
The defendants face three years in prison et 45,000 euros fine. “Given their age, they could get a reprieve. No one has been fined 45,000 euros for this type of act so far, but we are demanding damages for the animal rights associations, as well as an additional penalty such as the ban on detention animals,” adds Stéphane Lamart.
The Stéphane Lamart association hopes that this new affair will increase public awareness and the authorities to the necessity more severe penalties against perpetrators of animal abuse.
