Dedicated mainly to healthcare professionals du Beauvaisis, this conference brought together nearly 100 people, mainly caregivers, two thirds of whom were trained in healthcare practices.medical hypnosis or wishing to improve.
During this half day organized jointly with theEmergence certified training institutespecialized in training in the practices ofhypnosis for health professionalsseveral speakers, internal or external to the hospital, presented the benefits and advantages of the practice of hypnosis in their respective fields, whether in palliative care, radiology, operating room, pediatrics…
A practice which is developing at the Beauvais hospital which has for several years been offering its staff the possibility of training in medical hypnosis on a voluntary basis, whether they are doctors, surgeons, caregivers, nurses, radiologists…
Testimonials of experiences at CHI
The insiders shared their experiences within their department through anecdotes and concrete examples, even videos…
After 38 years of practice, the Doctor Claude Virot, psychiatrist and director of the Emergence Training Instituteintroduced this conference with a presentation of the basics of hypnosis, the study on the effectiveness of which was validated by theINSERM in June 2015 “provided that it is carried out by health professionals“, its role in the overall care of the patient.
As well as the collective and personal benefits within teams of caregivers and or individually for the benefit of their mental health at the end of a hypnosis training (strongly weakened in particular following the period COVID with an increase in the rate of burn-out : 40% after COVID of caregivers burned out), not counting the studies carried out which would have demonstrated a certain economic benefit for the establishment by reducing care times. “The medicine of tomorrow begins here, at the Beauvais hospital center.“
Hypnosis in the operating room
As an example, the doctor Blyweert (anesthetist) and Mm. Vouhe (IADE), who practice operating room of the Beauvais hospital center, presented the interests of thehypnose inductive in particular to reduce the doses of anesthetics, sedatives and drugs, help the patient to relax, manage pain, or distract them during, for example, the passage of a catheter… A practice which has also made it possible to note the reduction in the time spent in the recovery room.
To avoid any confusion with “thehypnosis showe” to the Messmerthese caregivers use other means to invite the patient to relax by distracting them with invitations to travel, to the imagination, to pleasant memories, to music or through a simple conversation…
Through their experiences and practices, this experienced pair was able to see a clear improvement in “conviviality within the unit, so that the untrained understand better what we do” notably through “the game of positive sentences was very successful” during post-operative discussions and observations. Two videos were broadcast as examples.
In palliative care
In palliative care, still at Beauvais hospital, the nurse Gauthier Bartholome (nurse) and his partner Sabine Lobbé (nursing assistant) gave the example of an experience which particularly marked them through the memory of a patient suffering fromenormous paincomplicating her care in an “unprecedented” way for care that lasted for hours, with the need to monopolize a team of 2 to 4 caregivers around her.
Difficulties of care increased by a significant psychological suffering blaming a recent death and his daughter’s illness. “The team was in check for a simple change. We tried everything. Luckily, very respectful of hypnosis, which was hell for us due to his cries during the treatments (under hypnosis), she came out completely amnesiac despite the suffering, telling us: “It went well today!” This has changed our daily practices within the service: we listen more to each other between trained and untrained people, there is more attention paid to noises that could interfere with the intervention, and even if only with families to make them understand the benefit of medical decisions such as stopping eating.“
Self-hypnosis
Seeing the effects on him of hypnosis forstop smoking 3 years ago, Gauthier Bartholome wanted to transpose these beneficial effects to patients to in turn “give them more comfort“. A formation followed on site at the Beauvais hospital for two three-day sessions, which he wished to reinforce with a day of “supervision”. “Self-hypnosis also helps me a lot in my professional and personal life as well as for making the transition before moving on to another patient.” he confides.
And radiology
In radiology, even if only 3 caregivers are trained out of the thirty professionals in the service, again, “as long as we can communicate with the patient and with their agreement, everything is possible.“But due to a lack of sufficient trained personnel, the practice of hypnosis remains limited.”to patients for whom these examinations are essential.” if only to relax him and reassure patients, for example claustrophobes before taking an exam such as a CT scan or MRIa puncture during a mammography…
Benefits and limits
If these acts are not priced or recognized by social security and require time in advance to organize them with essential contact prior to the act with the patient, this remains a saving of time and comfort for the benefit of the services unanimously noted by the practicing caregivers who testified.
Used for several decades, this practice has proven itself in the medical world. If hypnosis remains a powerful complementary method with confirmed benefits to improve patient comfort and care, reducing pain, anxiety, stress… while also showing its advantages on the side of caregivers within the different medical disciplinesthis practice remains in certain situations strongly not recommended by the significant risks “immediate long-term decompensation” that they can induce on people “under the influence of a high level of alcohol or drugs whose state of consciousness is too altered, as well as in cases of high fever above 38 degrees. In 38 years of experience, I have never seen him because I only deal with patients who I can care for and who are requesting.” concludes the expert trainer psychiatrist Claude Virot.
