On September 12, 2020 at 9:20 p.m., Joao, 29, was stabbed to death in Morges (VD), while he was quietly spending an evening with friends on the terrace of a kebab shop, not far from the station.
Today, Joao’s parents and brother are demanding 200,000 francs in damages from Switzerland. They believe that the authorities did not take adequate measures, in the months preceding the young man’s assassination, against Omer, the future jihadist attacker. The latter had just been released from prison. He was therefore known to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office and placed under its supervision.
Since his release from the penitentiary, Omer had to fulfill certain obligations, such as reporting once a week to the Morgian police. Obligations from which he evaded, without the slightest reaction from the federal prosecutor in charge of monitoring him, explains the RTS in its “19:30”.
“Joao’s death would not have occurred if the appropriate measures, which could only be necessary given the situation, had been taken,” explains the family’s lawyer to our colleagues.
Still according to Joao’s family, the Confederation must answer for the alleged failings of the former federal prosecutor. She is asking for compensation of 80,000 francs for the victim’s mother, 80,000 francs for her father and 40,000 for her brother.
The file is in the hands of the Federal Department of Finance. A decision should be made in the coming months.
